A broken tooth root left in your gum can cause pain and infection. Learn when a root stump should be removed and what the procedure involves.
When a tooth is badly decayed or broken, the crown (visible part) can break away, leaving the root stump behind in the gum. Many people live with root stumps for years because they don't hurt, but they can cause problems.
Why Root Stumps Are a Problem
- Hidden infection: Bacteria can infect the root and bone, sometimes without pain
- Swelling and abscess: Pain and swelling can flare up suddenly
- Bad breath and bad taste
- Bone loss around the infected root
- Sharp edges that cut the tongue or cheek
- They prevent proper replacement with dentures, bridges or implants
Can a Root Stump Be Saved?
Sometimes. If enough healthy root remains and the gum and bone are healthy, the root may be treated with a root canal, a post and core, and then a crown. Your dentist will check with an X-ray first.
When Should It Be Removed?
Removal is usually recommended if the root is infected, badly decayed below the gum, cracked, or cannot support a crown.
What to Expect During Removal
- An X-ray shows the size and position of the root
- The area is fully numbed with local anaesthesia
- The oral surgeon gently loosens and removes the root, sometimes with a small surgical approach
- Stitches may be placed and removed after about a week
Recovery
Mild soreness for a few days is normal. Follow soft-food and aftercare instructions, avoid smoking, and take medicines as prescribed.
Replacing the Missing Tooth
After healing, the gap can be replaced with a dental implant, bridge or denture. In suitable cases, bone grafting at the time of removal helps prepare the site for a future implant.
