A palatal expander is one of the most effective early orthodontic tools for children. It gently widens a narrow upper jaw while your child is still growing, often making later braces simpler.
Why Would a Child Need One?
- Crossbite: Upper back teeth bite inside the lower teeth
- Crowding: Not enough space for adult teeth
- Narrow upper jaw or high palate
- Mouth breathing, sometimes linked to a narrow palate
- Impacted teeth that need space to come in
How Does It Work?
In children, the upper jaw is made of two halves joined by a growth seam in the middle of the palate. An expander is fitted to the upper back teeth and has a small screw in the centre. Turning the screw with a special key, usually once a day as instructed, gently separates the two halves. New bone then fills the gap.
Does It Hurt?
Children usually feel mild pressure in the teeth, nose or cheeks for a few minutes after each turn. It isn't painful, and most kids adapt within a few days.
How Long Is It Worn?
Active widening usually takes a few weeks. The expander then stays in place for several months so the new bone can stabilise.
Is a Gap Between the Front Teeth Normal?
Yes. A temporary gap often appears between the upper front teeth. It's a sign the expander is working and usually closes naturally or with braces later.
Best Age for Expansion
Expansion works best in growing children, typically before age 12 to 14, before the growth seam fuses. That's why an orthodontic check around age 7 is recommended.

- Brush carefully around the expander and rinse after meals
- Avoid hard, sticky and chewy foods
- Follow the turning schedule exactly
