What is palatal expanders?
A narrow upper jaw can cause crowded teeth, a crossbite (where upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth) and sometimes breathing difficulties. In growing children, the two halves of the upper jaw are not yet fully fused, so they can be gently widened. A palatal expander is a custom-made appliance fitted to the upper back teeth. It is gradually adjusted, usually with a small key, to widen the upper jaw over a few weeks, and is then left in place for several months while new bone fills in. Early expansion can create space for teeth, correct the bite and make later braces simpler.
