What is osmf treatment (mouth opening & fibrous band release)?
Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic condition, most often linked to chewing areca nut (supari), gutkha and paan masala. It causes stiff, pale fibrous bands inside the cheeks, a burning sensation with spicy food, and gradually reduces how wide you can open your mouth. OSMF is a potentially precancerous condition, so early diagnosis and regular monitoring are important. At Urja Dental Clinic in Phase 3B2, Mohali, our oral surgeon assesses the stage of the disease and plans treatment accordingly. This may include stopping the habit completely, medicines and nutritional support, mouth-opening exercises and physiotherapy devices, and, in advanced cases, surgical release of the fibrous bands to improve mouth opening. A biopsy may be advised where needed. We provide ongoing follow-up to monitor your condition and help you maintain your mouth opening.
