What is operculectomy (gum flap over wisdom tooth)?
When a wisdom tooth partly comes through the gum, a flap of gum tissue (operculum) can remain over it. Food and bacteria get trapped under this flap, causing pain, swelling and infection, a condition called pericoronitis. Operculectomy is a minor procedure that removes this gum flap so the area can be cleaned properly and the infection doesn't keep returning.
