What is apicoectomy (root-end surgery)?
Sometimes infection remains at the tip of a tooth's root even after a root canal, or a re-root canal isn't possible because of a crown, post or curved root. Instead of extracting the tooth, an apicoectomy can often save it. In this minor surgery, a small opening is made in the gum over the root tip, the infected tissue and the very end of the root are removed, and the root end is sealed. The gum is then stitched back, and the bone heals over the following months.
