Dark or black gums are common and usually harmless. Learn what causes gum pigmentation and how gum depigmentation can give you pinker gums.
Many people feel self-conscious about dark or black gums, especially when they smile. In most cases, dark gums are completely harmless. But if you'd like pinker gums, there is a simple cosmetic treatment called gum depigmentation.
What Causes Dark Gums?
- Natural melanin: The most common cause. People with darker skin often have more pigment in their gums too. This is normal and healthy.
- Smoking: Can cause dark brown patches known as smoker's melanosis.
- Some medicines can change gum colour.
- Old metal fillings or crowns can leave grey or dark marks.
When Should You See a Dentist?
Get your gums checked if you notice:
- A new dark spot that is growing or changing shape
- Dark patches along with swelling, bleeding or pain
- Sudden changes in gum colour
These need a proper examination to rule out other causes.
What Is Gum Depigmentation?
Gum depigmentation is a cosmetic procedure that removes the thin, pigmented outer layer of the gum. The gum then heals with lighter, pinker tissue. It is performed by a periodontist under local anaesthesia.
What to Expect
- The procedure usually takes under an hour
- Mild soreness for a few days, managed with medicines
- Soft, cool foods for the first few days
- Healing in about one to two weeks
Is It Permanent?
Results last a long time, but some pigment can slowly return over the years, especially in smokers. A touch-up can be done if needed.
Keep Your Gums Healthy
Healthy gums are firm and don't bleed. Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth, quit smoking and get professional cleaning every six months.
